A Lesson before dying pages 56-66
Dr. Joseph complimented Grant for having a good class and a good method of teaching. Dr. Joseph told Grant that he should teach them more about the pledge. He also told him that they should be a little bit more clean. Grant complained that the kids needed more materials and a better heater, but Dr. Joseph told Grant that it wouldn't be fair to the white school if the colored school gets better things. The next day, workers came with wheel barrels filled with wood. When they were dumping all the wood at the back, Grant saw them and can see that they were immature. They were joking around a lot and slowed down the work time. When they left, Grant told the kids to go chop the would outside. Then Grant realized his past, before he was a teacher. He remembered when he was the guy who chopped wood. He also remembered another guy named Matthew Antoine. They really didn't like each other and always had weird conversations.
